About

“ài” means love in Chinese, which is a simple word, but difficult. This is an immersive installation that harnesses the power of AI to create a transformative experience for parents and children, allowing them to express their profound love. This installation aims to bridge the emotional gap between generations, leveraging the advancements in AI technology to convey and enhance the unspeakable love shared by families in East Asia.

Turning intangible love into an entity.

Background

Through my observations and personal experiences, I have noticed the difficulty in openly expressing love and affection in East Asian families. Actions rather than words are often used to convey love, such as asking if one has eaten or showing care through small actions. However, I have sensed a longing for more direct and open communication, transcending cultural norms. Motivated by this, I am designing an immersive installation to bridge the emotional gap between generations.

User Research

I conducted a questionnaire to investigate communication challenges and methods of expressing love between parents and children in East Asia. The survey sample consisted primarily of participants from China, with a majority being female.

Among the respondents, 63.33% expressed that they found it somewhat challenging to openly express love and affection. This difficulty can be attributed to several factors, including:

In the questionnaire, the responses from participants regarding how children express love and affection to their parents compared to how parents express love and affection to their children indicate that communication in these cases tends to be mostly reserved and indirect.

Design Inspiration

Parts of the design inspiration for this installation was drawn from the movie “Eat Drink Man Woman.” Inspired by the film's portrayal of the profound connection between family, love, and food.

Experience Space

In creating the installation, I utilized tools like projection, MindMapper, and Touch OSC to bring the envisioned scene to life. The installation consists of two primary components: an online platform for dish uploads and a table display where these dishes are showcased. What sets this installation apart is its interactive nature, allowing the audience to engage with and contribute to the overall experience.
