Contemporary Craft Center

Brand Identity, Generative Design, Publication, Installation Design, Web Design

About

Craft is one of my greatest interests in life. I enjoy it as a way to make something out of nothing. I am always passionate about putting my interest into projects. Therefore, this is a hypothetical rebranding project for Craft Contemporary, a non-profit, non-collecting art museum located in Los Angeles, California. I rebranded the institution as the Contemporary Craft Center, accompanied by a new brand image that resonates with the diverse community of Los Angeles, capitalizing on the city’s profound appreciation for craft art.

Custom Typography System

In the new name “Contemporary Craft Center,” the letter “C” is the main letter used. The new typography system showcases nine distinct C’s, each symbolizing a different craft material. These varied C’s serve as the foundational elements that define the brand, embodying the essence of craftsmanship.

Logo Design

The brand logo, which is also the typography inspired by fiber arts, at the same time represents the museum's vision of creating bonds between the Los Angeles community and the craft world.

Collateral

The rebranding initiative spans diverse mediums, including poster, booklet, collateral, spatial, web, and installation design. As this is a thorough introduction to the new brand identity, conveying its connection to craftsmanship and engaging the public with its values.

Web Design

Crafting is FUN! With Figma, I designed the website visuals of the museum. By using the 9 C’s as the main graphic elements and adding interactive animations, it makes it more intriguing for the visitors to browse and attracts them to learn more. The web design for the Contemporary Craft Center is accessible in both web and mobile versions.

Scent Chords Lab

What is it? Scent & Sound?

The project ideally introduces an innovative experience—a lab called Scent Chords, located within the museum. While when we think of craft, it's often visual and tactile, this space is dedicated to exploring scent and sound, aiming to create a multi-sensory experience for visitors to learn about the charms of craft. Inspired by the museum’s past programs and the 19th-century chemist and perfumer Septimus Piesse. In 1858, Piesse created the ‘Odophone,’ a literal scale of smells corresponding to different pitches in Western musical notation. This lab drew from Piesse's theory and the project ‘Odophonics’ by Sean Francis Conway and Brian Goeltzenleuchter.

Custom Typography System

Considering the idea of the combination of scent and sound, I designed another typography system using two forms of script overlapping, trying to visualize the scent and sound through the graphic language. The script made from circles represents the spreading of scents and the script made from rectangles is inspired by piano keyboards and represents sound. Meanwhile a cross-reference table of music pitches and scents was redesigned according to the theory of Septimus Piesse.

Web Design

“Experience” is the main concept of this project. Also using Figma’s interactive animations, even on the web, visitors can play music, generate their own postcards with the lab's typeface, and journey through the experiment.

Generative
& Installation Design

1. Personalized Postcard Generator with p5.js:

Users can design unique postcards using p5.js, featuring the designed typeface. They can customize the design by adjusting pitches with sliders, choosing colors, and adding text. The final postcard can be saved and printed.

2. Musical Installation with Processing and Arduino:

This part focuses on connecting seven pitches with specific scents, visually represented through fluid simulation and color-coded for each scent-sound pair. A humidifier releases the scent matched to the color fluid displayed on the screen, with buttons to change colors, enhancing the multisensory interaction experience.
