About
“ài” means love in Chinese. It is a simple word, but not an easy one to express.
This immersive installation uses AI to create a space for parents and children to express what is often left unsaid. It focuses on the distance that can exist within East Asian families, and how technology might help surface those emotions.
It gives form to something that usually remains intangible.
Background
Through personal experience and observation, I noticed how difficult it can be to express love openly in East Asian families.
Care is often shown through actions rather than words. Asking if someone has eaten, or offering small gestures, becomes a way of saying something else. At the same time, there is a quiet desire for more direct communication.
This project begins from that tension. It takes shape as an immersive installation that looks at how those emotions might be expressed differently.

User Research
I conducted a questionnaire to understand how parents and children in East Asia communicate love, and where the difficulties lie. Most participants were from China, with a majority identifying as female.
63.33% of respondents said they find it difficult to express love openly. This points to several underlying factors:
The questionnaire shows a clear pattern in how love is expressed between parents and children.
Both directions tend to stay reserved and indirect.

Design Inspiration
Part of the design draws from the film Eat Drink Man Woman.
The film’s portrayal of family, love, and food informs how this installation approaches connection and care.

Experience Space
I built the installation using projection, MadMapper, and TouchOSC to construct the scene. It consists of two parts: an online platform where dishes are uploaded, and a table display where they are presented.
The work stays open to participation. The audience can engage with it and add to what is being shown.
